SERVICE2000_7/29

SERVICE2000 was originally shown during June and July 2000 and consisted of 29 web sites built for a range of commercial and pubically funded London galleries.

The work originated from a chance discovery that many galleries had either failed to register their own domain names, or had only registered on a single variant on their name - leaving a stock of other usable names readily available. What ensued was a brief period of not-for-profit cybersquatting during which times the SERVICE2000 sites functioned as the unofficial web presence of the London art world. At the conclusion of the project the urls were presented to the galleries involved (it was, after all, an outreach project on behalf of the internet) and several of these urls have since been assimilated into their organisation's web presence.

Seven of the sites are presented here in archive format for those who may have missed the whole project first time round.
